Can you convert my bathtub into a walk-in shower?

Yes, and it is one of the most common bathroom projects we do in the South Bay. The tub comes out, the drain is relocated for a shower pan, the valve is replaced and raised, and the walls and floor are waterproofed before tile. A standard 60-inch alcove converts into a generous shower with room for a niche and often a bench. The pan slope has to be right or water pools in the corners. Do I need a permit to remodel a bathroom?

If the work replaces a shower valve, relocates a drain, adds circuits or an exhaust fan, or changes framing, a permit is typically required. Like-for-like swaps such as a new faucet or vanity top usually are not. What is the best waterproofing for a tile shower?

A continuous membrane system installed to the manufacturer's instructions is the most reliable choice. Sheet membranes such as Schluter-Kerdi and foam board systems such as Wedi bond directly to the substrate with sealed seams, preformed corners, and a matched drain, so there is no gap for water to find. Liquid-applied membranes also perform well when built up to the specified thickness. Traditional mortar beds over a vinyl liner can last, but they hold water in the mortar and are prone to mildew and slow leaks. Whatever system is used, the pan should be water-tested before tile, since a mistake is invisible afterward.

Should I choose a curbless shower?
