Custom concrete and masonry construction in the South Bay, Los Angeles. Driveways, retaining walls, foundations, and stonework. Engineered for South Bay clay and hillside conditions. Paragon Home Services serves Redondo Beach, Torrance, Manhattan Beach, and all South Bay cities.
South Bay clay soil and hillside fill are not friendly to concrete. Standard pours without engineered drainage, proper rebar, and correct expansion joints crack within a few years. Paragon designs and pours driveways, retaining walls, footings, and decorative concrete with the engineering details that make them last — drainage at the back of every retaining wall, rebar at correct spacing, and control joints cut at proper intervals.
II.WHY IT MATTERS
Why Concrete Cracks (and How We Prevent It)
Soil and Subgrade
Concrete is only as good as what it sits on. We compact subgrade to 95%, install a proper aggregate base, and verify drainage before any pour. Skipping this step is why so many South Bay driveways crack and settle in the first wet winter.
Reinforcement and Joints
Rebar at correct spacing distributes load and limits crack width when shrinkage cracks form (which they always do). Control joints cut at the right intervals direct cracks to predictable locations. Most bargain concrete uses welded wire mesh that ends up at the bottom of the slab and does nothing — and joints get skipped.
Retaining Wall Drainage
Every retaining wall needs drainage at the back side: a perforated drain pipe, gravel backfill, and weep holes. Without it, hydrostatic pressure builds during rains and the wall fails — sometimes catastrophically on hillside lots. We design drainage into every wall.
III.PROCESS
Our Concrete & Masonry Process
01Site assessment and design — we measure, evaluate drainage and grading, and design the project with the right reinforcement and joints.
02Permit pull (when required) — retaining walls over 4 feet, structural footings, and projects in the public right-of-way require permits.
03Excavation and subgrade prep — soil excavated to design depth, compacted to spec, aggregate base installed.
04Forming and reinforcement — formwork built, rebar tied at correct spacing, embeds and dowels placed.
05Pour and finish — concrete placed, screeded, floated, and finished to specified texture (broom, smooth, exposed aggregate, or stamped).
06Joint cutting and curing — control joints saw-cut within the proper window, surface cured to spec.
07Backfill and drainage installation (retaining walls) — drain pipe, gravel backfill, and weep holes installed before any soil load.
08Sealing and final walkthrough — surface sealer applied where appropriate, project documented and warranted.

V.FAQ
Concrete & Masonry — Frequently Asked Questions
Why do concrete driveways crack in the South Bay?
The combination of expansive clay soil and inadequate subgrade prep is responsible for most cracking in inland Torrance, Carson, and Lomita. Hairline shrinkage cracks are normal and expected; major cracking that displaces edges or runs the full slab almost always traces back to subgrade or drainage failure.
Do retaining walls need permits?
In most South Bay cities, retaining walls over 4 feet measured from the bottom of footing to the top of wall require a permit. Walls supporting a surcharge (a driveway, structure, or hillside above) often require permits regardless of height. We verify the local code and pull permits as needed.
How long should concrete cure before I drive on it?
A residential driveway should be kept off vehicles for at least 7 days, with full design strength reached at 28 days. Walking traffic is fine after 24 hours. We cover the surface and apply curing compound to slow moisture loss and improve final strength — especially important in dry, windy South Bay weather.
Can you stamp or color my new concrete?
Yes. We pour stamped concrete in a wide range of patterns (slate, ashlar, cobblestone, wood plank) and integrate color via integral pigment, color hardener, or stain. Stamped concrete is roughly 30–50% more than standard broom-finish but delivers paver-like aesthetics at lower lifecycle cost.
