Handyman services in Los Angeles typically run $75–$150 per hour, with most common jobs — drywall patches, door adjustments, fixture swaps, gutter cleaning — landing between $150 and $500 for a single visit. What you pay depends less on the city and more on the specific job, whether materials are included, and how many tasks you bundle into one appointment. If you're searching for a local neighborhood handyman, the most important factor isn't the hourly rate — it's whether the person actually knows how older L.A. homes are built and what permits, if any, your job requires.
A handyman handles the repair and maintenance work that doesn't require a licensed specialty contractor — plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs — but still needs someone with real tools and real experience. In practice, that covers a wide range of tasks most homeowners put off for months.
None of this work typically requires a permit. The line gets crossed when you're moving walls, adding circuits, or touching plumbing supply lines — that's general contractor or specialty trade territory.
Gutter cleaning in Los Angeles isn't seasonal the way it is in other parts of the country. L.A. doesn't get fall foliage dumps in November — but eucalyptus, jacaranda, palm fronds, and dry-season debris build up steadily, and when the rains do hit (usually December through March), clogged gutters can push water behind fascia boards and into soffits fast. I've seen $150 gutter cleanings save homeowners from $3,000–$8,000 in wood rot and water intrusion repairs. On homes built in the 1950s–1970s — which make up a large share of the housing stock in the South Bay and through much of L.A. County — original K-style gutters are usually aluminum or galvanized steel and haven't been touched since installation. They're often holding so much debris they've lost their pitch entirely. Part of a proper cleaning is checking that slope and rehanging any sections that have sagged.
A lot of Los Angeles homes were built between 1940 and 1980 — that's plaster walls instead of drywall in many cases, original wood windows, older door hardware with non-standard sizing, and in some cases knob-and-tube wiring still present in attics. Knowing that before you start a repair changes what you do. Patching plaster is different from patching drywall. Hanging something heavy on a plaster wall requires finding lath or using the right toggle anchors. A handyman who's only worked on newer construction can make things worse on older homes. When I send someone out on a job, the first question is always what year the house was built — that tells you half of what you need to know before you even walk in the door.
"Local neighborhood handyman services" is one of the most searched phrases in this category — and for good reason. L.A. is a big city, and a handyman who's based 40 minutes away will either charge you for drive time or routinely cancel when a closer job comes up. Practically speaking, you want someone operating within 15–20 miles of your home who handles your type of work regularly.
Here's what actually matters when vetting someone:
Avoid anyone who quotes a flat "per job" price on the phone without asking what the job actually involves. Drywall repairs vary by size, wall type, and whether paint-matching is included. A quote given before seeing the work is usually wrong.
Most handyman companies in the L.A. area have a minimum service call fee — usually $75–$150 — which covers the first hour. After that, hourly rates apply. If you have a list of three to five small tasks, you can often get all of them done in two to three hours, which makes the per-task cost much more reasonable than scheduling separate appointments. Our handyman services page covers the full range of what Paragon handles, including what's in scope and what gets referred out.
For reference, here's a realistic cost range for the most common requests we see:
These are L.A.-area rates as of 2025. They'll vary slightly by neighborhood and by complexity, but if someone is quoting you significantly below these numbers, ask what's not included.
