Handyman services in Torrance typically run $75–$150 per hour depending on the scope, with most single-visit jobs — think furniture assembly, door adjustments, TV mounting, minor drywall patches — landing between $150 and $400 total. Multi-item punch lists can push higher, but bundling tasks into one visit almost always saves money compared to scheduling separate trips. A licensed, insured handyman is the right call for these jobs; neither a full general contractor nor a big-box installation crew is the right fit for small-scope work.
The honest answer is: a lot of the stuff that sits on your to-do list for months. Furniture assembly from IKEA, Wayfair, or Costco flat packs. TV mounting on drywall or brick. Door hardware swaps — locks, handles, deadbolts. Weatherstripping replacement on doors and windows that let in the marine layer every night. Fence board repair, screen door re-screening, towel bar installation, caulking around tubs and windows, light fixture swaps, ceiling fan replacement.
What a handyman does not cover: permitted structural work, full electrical panel work, gas line repairs, or anything requiring a specialty license. If a job needs a permit or involves load-bearing changes, that's a licensed general contractor job. When you're not sure, a quick call usually clarifies it in about two minutes.
Flat-pack furniture assembly is one of the most-requested handyman tasks we handle — and one of the most underestimated in terms of time. A standard IKEA wardrobe or desk with drawer hardware can take 2–3 hours if you haven't done it before, and longer if pieces are pre-drilled incorrectly or instructions are unclear. A handyman who has assembled dozens of the same units cuts that time significantly and knows where manufacturers hide the problem steps.
For large items — entertainment centers, bed frames, multi-piece shelving systems — professional assembly also matters for stability. Joints that aren't seated properly work loose over time on hardwood floors, and in Torrance's older ranch-style homes where rooms are larger and furniture tends to be freestanding, a wobbly piece is a real issue. We bring our own tools, including clamps and a level, so you don't spend the afternoon hunting for an allen wrench.
Torrance sits close enough to the coast that salt air is a factor for exterior hardware, screen frames, and wood fencing — especially in neighborhoods west of Hawthorne Boulevard toward the 190th Street corridor. Exterior door hardware corrodes faster here than it would in, say, the 91st Street area closer to Gardena. When we replace exterior handles or hinges, we default to stainless or solid brass over zinc-plated hardware because the zinc finishes don't last.
The city also has a significant stock of 1950s–1970s construction — post-war ranch homes on concrete slab foundations. These homes commonly need weatherstripping attention (original door frames have settled), bathroom caulking maintenance, and swinging door adjustments as the slab shifts seasonally. None of that is major structural work; it's exactly the kind of recurring maintenance a handyman handles well.
Most handyman work falls into one of three buckets:
Materials are usually extra. If the job requires a specific part — a replacement hinge size, a particular caulk type, outlet covers — those get added to the invoice. For most jobs, the labor is where the variance is, not the materials.
Note: handyman work in California does not require a permit for cosmetic or maintenance tasks. If a repair crosses into structural, electrical, or plumbing territory — even minor — the rules change. An experienced handyman will flag that before starting, not after.
The single best thing you can do before a handyman arrives is write out your full list — even the things you think are too small to mention. In 18 years, I've never had a homeowner regret adding a task to the list. The opposite happens constantly: someone forgets to mention the stuck bathroom door or the curtain rod that needs anchoring, and now it's another scheduling cycle.
For furniture assembly jobs specifically, have the boxes in the room where the furniture will live before we arrive. Moving a fully-assembled wardrobe down a hallway adds time and risk — assembling it in place is always better. If you have the instruction manual already open or the hardware bags sorted, that saves another 15–20 minutes on complex pieces.
