III.PROCESS

EV Charger Installation Process

1. 1

Tell us the vehicle, where you park, and whether a second EV is likely — that alone shapes circuit size and charger placement.

2. 2

On-site assessment — an electrician opens the panel, measures the wire route, and runs a load calculation to confirm available capacity.

3. 3

Fixed quote with real options — for instance a 40-amp versus 60-amp circuit, hardwired versus plug-in, or an energy management device instead of a panel upgrade.

4. 4

Permit filing with your city building department, LADBS, or LA County Building and Safety, depending on your address.

5. 5

Installation — dedicated breaker, correctly sized copper conductors in conduit, charger mounted at a comfortable cord reach, and weatherproofing for any outdoor location.

6. 6

Commissioning — we set the charger's amperage limit to match the breaker, connect it to your Wi-Fi if it has an app, and confirm the car draws power at the expected rate.

7. 7

City inspection and permit closeout, with us on site to walk the inspector through the circuit.

VI.FAQ

EV Charger Installation — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Level 2 EV charger installation cost in the South Bay?

When the panel has spare capacity and the charger goes in an attached garage near that panel, installation typically runs about $1,200 to $2,500 plus the charger itself. Long runs across a finished house, exterior conduit out to a driveway, or trenching to a detached garage commonly bring the total to $3,000 to $5,000 or more. If a service upgrade is required, that is a separate and larger line item. Wire length, conduit route, drywall or stucco repair, and circuit size drive the number. Paragon quotes a fixed price after visiting the property.

Do I need a panel upgrade before installing an EV charger?

Often no. A load calculation under the California Electrical Code weighs your home's existing demand against the new charging circuit, and many 100-amp and 125-amp homes can support a 40-amp circuit, particularly with gas heat and gas cooking. Where capacity is tight, an energy management device can watch the panel and throttle charging while other large loads run, an approach the code recognizes as an alternative to upsizing service. An upgrade becomes necessary when there is truly no capacity, no breaker space, or the panel is an obsolete Federal Pacific or Zinsco unit.

Is a permit required for a home EV charger?

Yes. Adding a 240-volt circuit and charging station requires an electrical permit and inspection from the local building department in every South Bay city. California requires cities to offer a streamlined permitting path for residential EV chargers, so the paperwork is rarely the slow part. The inspection is there to protect you: it confirms the conductor size, breaker, and grounding are right for hours of continuous load in an attached garage. An unpermitted charger can also raise awkward questions during a home sale or an insurance claim. We file the permit and meet the inspector.

Is Level 1 charging on a regular outlet enough?

Level 1 charging uses a standard 120-volt outlet and adds only about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. That can work for a plug-in hybrid or a very short commute, but it rarely keeps pace with a full-size EV driven daily around the South Bay and up the 405. Level 2 charging on a dedicated 240-volt circuit adds roughly 20 to 45 miles per hour, so the battery is full each morning no matter how far you drove. For a second EV or a large electric truck or SUV, Level 2 is effectively required.

Can you install chargers for two electric vehicles?

Yes. The most panel-friendly approach is two chargers that share a single circuit and split available power between them, which Tesla Wall Connectors and several universal chargers support. Each car charges more slowly when both are plugged in, which overnight rarely matters. Two separate full-size circuits give each car full speed but demand considerably more panel capacity and often force a service upgrade. We look at both vehicles' battery sizes and how your household really drives before recommending one approach over the other.

Can I put a charger in at my condo or townhome?

Usually yes. California's Civil Code limits a homeowners association's ability to prohibit or unreasonably restrict a charger in a deeded or exclusive-use parking space. The association can still require an application, plans, a licensed contractor, proof of insurance, and payment for the electricity used. The harder part is technical: the distance from your unit's meter to your stall, or whether the building's common service has capacity. We assess the route, prepare the documentation the HOA asks for, and coordinate garage access with the property manager.
