Do I need a permit to build a BBQ island?

The masonry island alone may not require a building permit in every jurisdiction, but the utilities inside it do — and unpermitted gas work is a common problem at resale or during an insurance inspection. Can a BBQ island be framed with wood?

It can be, but we don't recommend it. Wood framing also rots and attracts termites once it's wrapped in stone and exposed to irrigation and coastal moisture, and it moves enough to crack veneer. How far does a BBQ island need to be from the house?

There's no single universal number. The grill manufacturer's installation manual sets required clearances to combustible materials — walls, eaves, patio covers, and overhead structures — and they vary by model, sometimes significantly. Cities and HOAs can add setback rules from property lines, and covered installations raise ventilation questions, where a hood may be required.
