Tile — Frequently Asked Questions

Why do shower tiles leak after a few years?

Almost always because the waterproofing wasn't done correctly — drywall behind tile, missing or inadequate membrane at the curb and corners, or a failed mud-set pan. The tile and grout are not the waterproofing; the substrate is. Failed shower waterproofing leads to wet wall framing, mold, and eventually a full tear-out. We use Schluter Kerdi sheet membrane on every shower for this reason.

Can you install tile over my existing tile?

Sometimes — if the existing tile is well-bonded, the substrate is structurally sound, and the height buildup doesn't create transition or appliance issues. Often the cleaner approach is to demo the existing tile so we can verify substrate condition and waterproofing. We assess case-by-case.

How long does a bathroom tile job take?

A typical full bathroom shower and floor tile installation takes 4–7 working days from demo to final grout cure: 1 day demo, 1 day substrate and waterproofing, 2–3 days setting, 1 day grout, 1 day seal. Larger or natural-stone installations extend the timeline.

Do natural stone and porcelain need different installation?

Yes. Natural stone is more sensitive to mortar choice (white-set thinset to avoid staining), requires sealing before and after grouting, and benefits from larger trowel sizes for full coverage. Porcelain large-format requires medium-bed mortar and leveling clips. We adjust the install for the material — most failures happen when one approach is used on every job.
